The CAlambic Series

2010 Napa vintage BarrelsAs we put the finishing touches on our CAlambic series with our upcoming Montmorency cherry brew, we wanted to share some background on how we got here. Sours are a big part of High Water and there’s some history behind it.

Going back to the 90’s, Brewmaster Steve was experimenting with sour barrel beers thanks to his love of Cantillon and Drie Fonteinen. Not everyone is a fan of the hop bitterness that comes with the all-popular IPA style and as Steve points out, the sour taste profile pairs nicely with a variety of food. It’s also refreshing thanks to all the fresh fruit used. He and his wife, Barri, First Lady and Flavorologist of High Water are longtime fans of sour beers and have stayed on the leading edge of innovation with this style.

National S’mores Day

NATIONAL S'MORES DAYNational S’mores Day is officially August 10th but here at High Water, we’ll be celebrating the whole month of August with all sorts of Campfire Stout fun! If you haven’t tried our flagship stout, our motto is “Leaves you wanting S’more”. It’s been described as “liquid s’mores” or “s’mores in a bottle”. Is it brewed with graham crackers, roasted marshmallows and chocolate? It certainly tastes that way! Here in Northern California, August means camping. And remember, like any campfire experience, Campfire Stout is best shared with a warm circle of family and friends. Award Winning Summer

WCIThe summer, thus far, has been tremendous for High Water in our craft beer competition entries. We have several awards at 2 major California based competitions.

At the 2016 West Coast Invitational Commercial Craft Beer CompetitionAphotic, our Imperial Porter took 3rd in the Mild, Porters and Stouts category. Cucumber Kolsch, a new summer release, took 2nd in the Specialty Beers category. And Stella Blue, a new offering in our CAlambic series, took 1st in the Wheat/Saison/Belgian/Sour category as well as 2nd in the overall Best of Show group!

The Commercial Craft Beer Competition is part of the larger West Coast Invitational beer festival. Limited to West Coast breweries, it is one of the last remaining fully sanctioned craft brewer competitions. This year, there were over 160 beers entered and judged for 10 distinct categories and the Best of Show award. Hosted at Sactown Union Brewery, the judging was done with a triple blind tasting process meaning the judges had no idea what brand of beer was being tasted in each category.

CA State FairAnd at the 2016 Best of California Commercial Craft Brew Competition, which is part of the California State Fair, Campfire Stout took 1st in the Specialty Beers category and Stella Blue also took 1st in the Spice/Herb/Vegetable Beer category!

In this competition, California craft brews are professionally judged in order to recognize the best commercially brewed beers in California.

All in all, a tremendous start to the summer and the whole crew at High Water is honored to be rewarded for producing beers that push the traditional style boundaries and focus on the unique flavors we love to create. Cheers!

Beer of the Week: High Water Brewing Campfire Stout

After a one week hiatus, the Beer of the Week is back. With the summer in full swing, and the family prepping for a trip to Lassen, I thought something camping themed would be in order. What better than a beer that looks like a fire and tastes like a s’more? This week’s Beer of the Week is High Water Brewing’s Campfire Stout.

Campfire Stout evokes fond memories of wilderness and camping adventures. Notes of chocolate and graham cracker topped with a hint of marshmallow will leave you wanting s’more. Like any campfire experience, this beer is best shared with a warm circle of family and friends.

Campfire Stout starts off with a big sweet marshmallow nose. The aroma is unmistakable. When drinking in the opaque black beer, the mat washes over the tongue with notes of dry cocoa powder including the soft bitterness. Blueberry, chocolate and a bit of smoke come through in this well-rounded beer that’s slightly sweet but dry in the finish.

Beer Review: High Water Brewing’s Anniversary Doppelsticke

High Water Brewing recently celebrated its first birthday. In honor of the occasion, brewer Steve Altimari created the Anniversary Doppelsticke (pronounced “Dopple-shtick-uh”). It’s a beer style that some knowledgeable beer fans may not be familiar with.

Here’s a little background about the style. A good starting point is the German Altbier, which is brown ale. A close cousin of the Altbier is the Sticke Alt, which is a stronger and darker seasonal version that is quite rare. The Doppelsticke is an Imperial version of the Sticke Alt.

High Water’s Anniversary Doppelsticke is a rich, dark copper-brown brew that when poured produces a finger of frothy off-white head. The head slowly fades and leaves behind some spotty lacing clinging to the sides of the glass. If you give the beer a good sniff, sweet toasted caramel malts and brown sugar notes fill the nose, with some noble hops and biscuit playing strong supporting roles. There is also just a touch of sweet dark fruits. I was really impressed with how full the aroma was without being too sharp and strong.

When sipped the beer hits the tongue in a very similar manner to how it struck the nose. There’s a wonderful balance of sweet lightly toasted caramel malts with some brown sugar sweetness and some citrus and noble hops coming through. Through the middle the complexity builds a bit with some biscuit and a touch of hop bitterness. The finish is a mix of toasted biscuit and toffee malts and a hint of dark fruit sweetness. The beer is medium bodied, with moderate carbonation and is extremely smooth with a dry and slightly sweet finish.

I have high expectations when new High Water brews are released and this particular beer was even more surprising in quality and uniqueness. The balance of flavors are fantastic and the beer has an incredible (and almost dangerous) smoothness at 7.5% ABV. I definitely recommend seeking this one out and giving it a shot, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the style.

We asked Brewers Association member breweries to send us information on their latest summer seasonal releases, and here’s what they had to say:


 

High Water No Boundary IPA
San Leandro, CA

No Boundary IPA is a beer inspired by the diversity of ingredients available to brewers today. The summer 2012 release will feature yeast from the Ardennes region of Belgium, hops from Australia and New Zealand and Lemon Verbena from the California Central Valley, which provides not only a slight lemon nuance but a unique bittering component as well.

Availability: No Boundary will be sold throughout CA in both draft and 22 ounce bottles.

Rate Beer Best New Brewer’s of 2012 #4/1473 – RateBeer.com

These are the top brewers who started collecting their first ratings after December 31, 2010. Considering there were 1473 new world wide brewers registered in 2011 at RateBeer, these five are a very elite bunch. For comparison, the entire Great American Beer Festival — the next largest beer contest after RateBeer — hosted only 469 brewers in total. Congratulations all!

2011 was no doubt a tasty year for new craft beers hitting the scene. While we anticipate this being a very tough decision for you to make, we are here to ask you, the loyal reader/follower of The Full Pint….what is the Best Craft Beer of 2011? We’ve comprised a poll of nearly 50 nominees that we feel meet our criteria for initial nomination. Simply, to be eligible, the beer must have been introduced to the public in 2011, and in most cases, made it’s bottled/canned debut in 2011.  A quick check on ratebeer.com can give you a good gauge on when a beer was born, piloted then introduced.
